Carla Dias ’21 answers call of service: “There is no better time to reengage with our communities”
Carla Dias ‘21 takes “In the Service of Humanity” to heart. During the fall semester, she spent her Thursdays volunteering at a hospice facility, feeling the acute difference between that environment and the typical undergraduate experience. When she found herself back home in March thanks to the pandemic, she took a similar tack, looking for ways to help in her community.

Josh Litwin ’87 and Friends Create 21st-Century Counterpart to Rosie the Riveter
When the coronavirus pandemic hit the San Francisco Bay area, three members of the Class of 1987 welded their skills to support those serving on the frontlines. Josh Litwin ’87, Deborah Weil Taylor ’87, and Peter Heinecke ’87 forged Homefront Rosie, an effort to supply healthcare workers with low-cost, reusable, plastic face shields.

Power of the Pivot: Bogle Fellows Book Exchange
When COVID-19 made the usual programming for new Bogle Fellows impossible, Pace Center Program Coordinator Kira O’Brien turned to a low-tech resource — books — to bring new Fellows together. She developed a book exchange in order to facilitate group cohesion in this time of social distancing, noting how for her, exchanging books is “a way to engage someone in a conversation, share a perspective, and invite someone to grapple with something alongside you.”

At a California Food Bank, Anthony Shu ’16 Watches Needs Grow
As the marketing coordinator at Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, a food bank in California’s Bay Area, Anthony Shu ’16 has seen a dramatic increase in need since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hotline phone calls are up 500 percent, and Second Harvest’s Get Food web page has seen traffic increase tenfold since sheltering-in-place began.

Kolanut Capital Kenya, an Africa-focused investment company founded by a group of Princeton alumni and current students, donated 600 chickens to the Nakuru County Level 5 Hospital in Kenya.

With One Project, Alum Aids Both Restaurant and Hospital Workers
Harvard medical student Natalie Guo ’12 founded Off Their Plate to feed hospital workers while keeping local restaurants workers employed in eight cities nationwide. Within a few weeks, the group had raised $3 million in donations and had served more than 100,000 meals from more than 90 participating restaurants.

Feeding the Frontlines
Disappointed to leave campus due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Princeton seniors and twin sisters Sneha and Preeti Iyer arrived back home to Fulton County, Georgia, ready to redirect their energy and reconnect with friends by helping launch a much-needed initiative that supports overworked health care workers in their communities.

Princeton University Relief Fund established to advance local community efforts in response to COVID-19
Princeton University has established the Princeton University Relief Fund to provide additional direct support to community organizations that are working to alleviate economic distress related to COVID-19 among individuals and businesses. The initial University commitment to the fund will be $1 million.
